After failing to qualify for the 1998 world cup finals, the Welsh did not enjoy the finest of results in 1998; they suffered a humiliating 4-0 defeat away against Tunisia and lost to Italy in a match played at Liverpool.

Mark Hughes was installed as the new manager of Wales in the year 1999 and they started off their Euro 2000 qualification campaign at the start of the 1998 – 1999 season. They started off well, defeating Belarus 3-2 at Cardiff; however three consecutive defeats against Switzerland, Italy and Denmark ruled them out of qualification without even playing half their matches. The Welsh endured a miserable night in October 1999 as they lost 2-1 to Switzerland in a home match played against Switzerland. At the start of the new millennium, Wales played a string of friendly matches and lost four matches in a row, including defeats against Finland, Brazil, Portugal and Belarus. They started off the 2002 world cup qualifying campaign in poor form, they were heavily criticised for drawing too many matches. They drew three matches in a row against Armenia, Norway and Poland and qualification seemed impossible. Wales suffered defeat against Poland in a match played at Cardiff in June 2001 and they were out of the running to qualify. At the start of the year 2002, Wales enjoyed a delightful run, which included two fine draws against Argentina and the Czech Republic which was followed by a heroic win over Germany.
