Wales came in to their Euro 92 qualifying campaign in poor form, struggling to defeats against Sweden and the Republic of Ireland in previous matches and they were drawn in a Euro 92 qualifying group that featured the world champions, Germany and Euro 80 runners up, Belgium. Wales got of to a fantastic start as Dean Saunders and Ian Rush led Wales to an amazing 3-1 home in over Belgium. They defeated Luxembourg in their next match winning the tie 1-0 despite having Clayton Balckmore sent off early on. Wales followed that up by a priceless draw away against Belgium and qualification looked a possibility half way through the campaign. In June 1991, they entertained world champions, Germany at Cardiff Arms Park and defeated the nation 1-0; one of the finest ever results in Welsh football history. They went one better in September, defeating the mighty Brazilians 1-0 at home in a friendly with Dean Saunders scoring the winning goal. Wales met Germany in October knowing a draw should see them qualify however they suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat and this made qualification difficult. Despite beating Luxembourg 1-0 at home in their final match, Germany topped the group one point clear of Wales. Wales could not repeat their Euro 92 heroics in attempting to qualify for the 1994 world cup. They began their qualifying campaign early on in May 1992, suffering a heavy 5-1 defeat in a forgettable match in Romania. They played few friendlies in the summer of 1992 which included a heavy 4-0 defeat against Holland. Wales went on to win four of their next five qualification matches and qualifying now seemed a possibility, it was a run that included a 2-0 win over Belgium. In a crunch final qualifying match in Cardiff against Romania, a heavy victory could have booked Wales a ticket to the world cup finals; however they suffered heart break, losing the encounter 2-1.
