Wales started off the Euro 92 group in amazing fashion winning both matches and faced a tough challenge away against Belgium. Wales dominated most of the first half and came close to taking the lead through Gary Speed. Belgium went ahead in the opening quarter of an hour in the second half but ten minutes later, Dean Saunders equalized and Wales held on to what seemed to be a fine point and put Wales at the top of the group.

The world champions, Germany travelled to Wales to meet them in a Euro 92 qualifying match as the Welsh were on form in the group, sitting at the top of the table. The match was played at the Welsh national stadium and the Germans fielded a defensive team, in attempting to quell the attacking threat of Dean Saunders, Mark Hughes and Ian Rush. Matthaus went off injured mid way through the first half and ten minutes in to the second half, Thomas Berthold lost control and was dismissed for trampling all over Kevin Ratcliffe. In the 69th minute of the match, Ian Rush sprinted on to a long through ball from Bodin and scored to give Wales the lead and the Welsh held on to a famous victory, earning the two points and an unexpected boost to their aspirations of qualifying for Sweden. |
