In the final match of their qualifying group, Wales put on a determined performance against a Romanian team who were in search of qualifying for Euro 72. Despite going down early on through a goal scored by Lupescu, Wales pressed hard for an equalizer and came close, as John Toshack hit the woodwork on two occasions. They continued to threaten to equalize until Lucescup scored later in the second half to ensure that Romania will qualify for the quarter finals of the competition.

Wales met Hungary in this crucial Euro 76 qualification match and it proved to be a great night for Welsh football. They dominated the early moments of the match with Griffiths coming close on several occasions. They improved their game even further during the second half and finally scored from a fine goal by Griffiths. That goal was followed up by another, this time by John Toshack. Wales now sat nicely at the top of the group table with two matches gone.

Hungary 1-2 Wales
Date Played – March 1975

Wales travelled to Hungary for this crucial Euro 76 qualifier, enjoying something of an upsurge in their fortunes since the appointment of manager Mike Smith, hoping for a point, however even they got more than they requested by the end of the match. The Welsh held out early against the Hungarian pressure and then Wales took the lead through John Toshack just before the first half interval, scoring a close range shot. The Welsh doubled the lead early on in the second half with a goal scored by Mahoney and, despite the Hungarians pulling a goal back, Wales won the encounter 2-1 and moved top of the table.
