Charles played for Wales, helping the nation qualify for the 1958 world cup finals and represented them in the world cup. He started his domestic career playing for his local team, Swansea Town, making over 250 appearances between 1952 and 1959 for them. In March 1959, Charles signed for Arsenal for a fee of £40,000 and really only became a regular in the Arsenal team during the 1961 – 1962 season after suffering injuries. After a successful spell playing for the Gunners, Charles played for Cardiff City before ending his career with Port Vale and Porthmadog.

Crowe was key member of the Wales side of the late 50’s and early 1960’s. In total, the right half was capped by his nation on 16 occasions. He played his domestic football for Aston Villa and made captained Villa to winning the league cup in 1961. He was an inspirational figure in the Aston Villa side that gained promotion to the top flight in the year 1957.
