Wales started the year 1960 off in great form, winning three matches consecutively as they defeated Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland and Scotland. They enjoyed a fine 5-1 win over Northern Ireland in April 1961 and the Welsh faced Spain in a two legged match with the winner qualifying for the 1962 world cup finals. They suffered a crushing 2-1 defeat at home at Cardiff in the first match and played well in earning a brave 1-1 draw in Madrid, however they lost on aggregate and failed to qualify.

The next three years proved to be a shambles for the Welsh, they lost six consecutive matches between May 1962 and November 1962, the last defeat being a 3-1 loss at Budapest against Hungary, which was a Euro 64 qualification match. They drew with the Hungarians in March 1963, which in turn meant the Welsh failed to qualify for the 1964 European Championships. Vic Crowe and Melvyn Charles were outstanding for Wales during this time period.
