The Welsh endured a miserable night in October 1999 as they lost 2-1 to Switzerland in a home match played against Switzerland. At the start of the new millennium, Wales played a string of friendly matches and lost four matches in a row, including defeats against Finland, Brazil, Portugal and Belarus.
